Photocoupler reduces power for high-speed comms in automotive applications

Able to reduce power consumption by 25 per cent of that required by its predecessors, the TLX9310 is a low power consumption photocoupler from Toshiba Electronics Europe.

The photocoupler is housed in a five-pin 3.7 x 7.0 x 2.2mm SO6 package. The TLX9310 is intended for high-speed communication in automotive applications, especially battery management systems (BMS).

According to Toshiba, integrating a high-power infra red (IR) LED and high-gain, high-speed photo IC chip reduces power consumption to below 25 per cent of Toshiba’s current devices (TLX9304, TLX9376, TLX9378) both during standby and active use in automotive applications. Supply current is just 0.3mA. The TLX9310 provides high levels of safety isolation with 5.0mm (minimum) creepage / clearance distances and a 3.75kV rms (minimum) isolation voltage. The low propagation delay of 250ns (maximum) permits use in high-speed communication systems.

The operating temperature range of -40 to +105 degree C makes the photocoupler suitable for demanding automotive applications, says Toshiba. Toshiba has begun mass production shipments of the TLX9310.
