DC/DC converter boasts industry’s lowest current consumption of 180nA

For IoT applications, where battery life is an important consideration, Rohm Semiconductor has used Nano Energy technology in its BD70522GUL DC/DC converter.

The BD70522GUL DC/DC converter has integrated MOSFETs and meets the requirements of the IoT market for a long battery life of up to 10 years with a single coin battery due to its low power consumption of only 180nA.

Using Nano Energy technology, based on low-current analogue technologies for control circuitry and analogue layout optimised for power supply ICs, and its 0.35µm BiCDMOS power processes, Rohm was able to realise the current consumption of 180nA.

A seamless switching mode control (SSMC) function is integrated. This automatically switches the load mode depending on the load current. The BD70522GUL DC/DC converter delivers a high power conversion efficiency of more than 90 per cent over a load range of 10-microA to 500mA and consumes less than one microA in standby mode.

Dimensions for the BD70522GUL are 1.76 x 1.56 x 0.57mm. Switching frequencies are between 0 and 1.0MHz, depending on the load. The converter works with supply voltages from 2.5 to 5.5V. As output voltages, the IC supplies 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2 or 3.3V. The accuracy of the output voltage is ±2.0 per cent (at 10mA), the maximum output current 500mA.

Operating temperature range is between -40 and +85 degree C. The DC/DC converter is designed for compact battery-powered devices such as wearables, sensor nodes and other industrial equipment such as alarms and electronic shelf labels.

Both the BD70522GUL and its evaluation board (BD70522GUL-EVK-101) are available for purchase through online distributors.
