Charging ICs target single-cell Li-Ion and polymer secondary batteries

Small and thin linear charging integrated circuits (ICs) for wearable and internet of things (IoT) applications have been released by Torex Semiconductor. The XC6808 series is for single-cell lithium ion (Li-Ion) or polymer secondary batteries (Lithium batteries) that support a charge completion voltage of 4.35 or 4.40V.

Torex Semiconductor reports that in recent years, wearable devices and IoT devices have become thinner, smaller and have higher performance demand. At the same time, the small-size, high energy density lithium batteries have a higher charge completion voltage. This has created an increased demand for charging ICs that are compatible with these new products, says Torex Semiconductor.

In addition to the conventional charge completion voltage of 4.20V, the XC6808 series supports 4.35 and 4.40V, and is compatible with a wide range of lithium battery types. Leakage current from the lithium battery has been reduced to 20 per cent (100nA standard) of previous products, which means that these products can contribute to longer standby times by holding down lithium battery energy loss while devices are on standby and during long periods of storage while devices are waiting to be used after shipment from the factory.

Five or 10 hours can be selected for the charge timer, allowing flexible setting of the C rate as needed for maximum charge current restrictions.

The ICs are housed in the low profile USP-6B07 package, measuring 2.0 x 1.8 x 0.33mm. The package can also support smart cards and is particularly suitable for electronic devices with limited space, adds Torex Semiconductor.

Torex Semiconductor provides CMOS power management ICs targeted toward battery powered and energy efficient applications. Torex specialises in CMOS analogue technology, with LDO voltage regulators, voltage detectors and DC/DC converters.
